Last night I watched Neguin’s bboy workshop video and I was astounded. Brings a whole new perspective of bboying to the community. Got me thinking a lot and started thinking in metaphorical terms how I can improve my overall move set while expressing myself exponentially more. Neguin states… think with the mind and create your bboy style through imagination and everyday life. How would you take a shower and sing when no ones around? Toss that into your top rock and tweak it up. How would a fish swim? Imagine your legs as it’s tail and swift kick up and down while you body roll. Take certain pieces apart and apply it to your style.
Analyzing that concept, it sparked an epiphany. Imagine jumping into a small pond and seeing yourself splashing creating a ripple effect permeating the pond. The goal in bboying is to continue the ripple effect in swift fluid motion throughout the pond without creating chaotic splashes. Each small ripple from the point of origin leads to different pathways, in essence other steps/freezes/power moves/aerials. Different moves create different ripple mannerisms giving yourself other paths to follow. Sudden uncontrolled movement would distort the essence of the pond aka crashing or jumping into a move without knowing how to get in or get out. Imo bboying is all about dimensions and space. Using all levels- ground, middle, air defines more flavor. Gives you more room for self expression which bboying should be about. Would you rather have a plain hamburger with just buns and meat? Hell no you want buns, meat, tomatoes, cheese and more. Having those extras toppings makes a better burger. Apply it to dancing as well as life too.
Last month made me realize what it is to be a real bboy not a breakdancer more than the others years I’ve been breaking for. Normally I’d give up on certain power moves/footwork and rush into just doing blowups but not anymore. For once I want to step outside my normal style and improve on other aspects I’ve been lacking on. Only way to get better. Drive, determination, and hard work will take you anywhere. Dance to express. Bboying is about your mentality first before you actually get on the floor.
